Google Acquires JotSpot

We're writing to let you know that Google has acquired JotSpot. We believe this is great news for our users. More importantly, we want to reassure you that you'll continue to have uninterrupted access to your account. Both Google and JotSpot are committed to supporting our customers, and we understand that users have invested a lot in our products. In the near-term, we're focused on migrating JotSpot to Google's systems and datacenters. We'll work hard to make that move as seamless as possible so that customers won't be inconvenienced.

Why is Google acquiring JotSpot?

Google shares JotSpot's vision for helping people collaborate, share and work together online. JotSpot's team and technology are a strong fit with existing Google products like Google Docs & Spreadsheets and Google Groups.

What does this mean for JotSpot customers?

We believe that joining Google will accelerate our team's vision of offering users the best collaboration platform on the web. Google shares that vision and presents us with the world's best environment for delivering on it. We'll be taking advantage of Google's world-class systems infrastructure and operations expertise to ensure that access to your JotSpot is fast and reliable. We can't share any of our plans publicly just yet, but we can tell you that we're incredibly excited about the possibilities. We can't think of a better company to have been acquired by.

I was one of their first beta testers, it's a great Wiki and I wish them the best of luck - We’re Googlers now

My Spot Got.Jot.com was in hibernation, but I just loged-on and they welcomed me back!

Massively Multiplayer Game Design

Jack Emmert, Lead Designer of Cryptic Studios gave the day two Keynote at the Serious Games Summit .

One of the most fascinating aspects to massively multiplayer games like City of Heroes is the amazing user behaviors that take place inside hugely social online worlds. Whether collaboration, leadership, or peer-to-peer education, researchers everywhere are documenting and discussing the social phenomenon of online games. This is great, but if we're going to use MMP design ideas and technologies to create new styles of education, collaborative environments and leadership training, we need to look at how these games actually instill and support these behaviors. Many of the core behaviors that fascinate people about online worlds did not just emerge of out thin air.

In this talk Jack Emmert, the lead designer of City of Heroes, details what goes into the refined design of hit multiplayer games and the specific approaches games in the multiplayer space use to foster collaborative and other behaviors that many recognize as the foundation of next-generation knowledge worker skill set.

Serious Gamers

Ben Sawyer in his talk Serious Stuff Gamers Do at the Serious Games Summit demonstrated that there is something extraordinary going here.

Windows Media Player 11

Microsoft Releases Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP

I've been running a beta Windows Media Player on my XP machines for half a year without any problems, so now we have the release candidate ready to DOWNLOAD NOW.

I remember when Windows Media Player 10 was released, I had a three hour advance notice and a blogger in Italy linked to my blog and I think all of Italy came through my blog that day to grab the link to the Windows Media Home. Godalo....

Henry Jenkins On Serious Games

Henry Jenkins
DeFlorz Professor of Humanities and Director of MIT Comparative Media Studies

In his new book, Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide, Henry Jenkins describes a world where old and new media collide, where grassroots and corporate media intersect, where the
power of the media producer and the power of the media consumer interact in unpredictable ways.
His book describes the emergence of a new participatory culture and a struggle over the terms of this participation. The book discusses the new kinds of collaborations that occur as large scale knowledge communities pool knowledge and work together to solve complex problems. What does all of this mean for serious games?

Are games the key interface to participatory culture in learning, messaging, training, and especially opinion research and expression?

What shifts in the media environment are paving the way for the serious games movement and which are blocking its forward momentum? How can serious games designers tap the collective intelligence and participatory impulses of their consumers? What might we gain by exploring such convergence culture phenomenon as user-generated content or transmedia storytelling as we pursue our own goals as educators and activists?

A Dot-Com Survivor’s Long Road

I've never used Shutterfly, OFoto or any other Web 1.0 photo site.

I learned about Flickr at the first Web 2.0 conference by sitting next to investers, so I was an early adapter and have several cool usernames.

Tagging ROCKS, it was amazing when we first began using Flickr. When I go to a conference and snap a hundred photos I'll find the best shots, crop them, Tag them and put them up on Flickr, but then some other guy snaps two hundred photos, some of his feet and other nonsensical things and then he spames the Tag.

I have five accounts on Flickr because they only let you store 200 photos before they charge you and I can't delete photos because other people have used them on their blogs, so I have a reasonability to keep them up there.

My favorite photo sites today are Bubbleshare and Zooomr, I know the developer-owners of these sites and I can tell you they won't need to burn $90 Million to become profitable.

IE AddOns

Building AddOns for Internet Explorer Could Net You A Trip To Mix07 and $2500!

The IE7 Team wants us to create AddOns and to encourage us they have offered the incentive of a contest, the best AddOn submitted between November 1st 2006 and February 9th 2007 wins a trip to Mix07 in Las Vegas, and $2,500.00 in cash. They hope to get a few Zunes for honorable mentions and maybe they will throw in a song or two.

For some strange reason the IE Team has partnered with IE trash talk Cnet rather then the DotNet community blogs to collect, evaluate and host add-ons for IEAddOns.com and the contest.

So Cnet is the winner of this contest before we even begin to code thanks to increased web traffic and advertising revenue, way too much of which comes from Microsoft.

Visit the IE AddOns site for a few tips and ideas

Microsoft Revenue

Microsoft Reports First Quarter Earnings

Microsoft today announced first quarter revenue of $10.81 billion

The solid revenue results for the quarter were at the top end of our expectations and represent a very good start to the fiscal year - Chris Liddell CFO at Microsoft.

Microsoft Profit and Revenue Up 11% on Strength of Games and Servers

Server & Tools revenue increased 17% thanks to Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 and Biz Talk Server.

Entertainment and Devices Division revenue grew 70% thanks to the XBOX 360 -

The strong results are a reflection of our solid execution and ongoing focus on operational excellence. As we look to the upcoming releases of Windows Vista, the 2007 Microsoft Office system and Exchange Server 2007, we are excited about these products and believe they will deliver unprecedented levels of business value to our customers. - Kevin Turner, COO at Microsoft

$10.81 billion is real money not some sort of dot com evaluation and all this without selling a single Zune or a copy of Windows Vista.

As I write this the NASDAQ is just opening for trading so keep an eye on MSFT

Edit: MSFT lost a penny on Friday Oct 27 '06,  go figure.....

Windows Vista Blog

Welcome to Our New Team Blog!

We’re coming to the close of the development cycle for Windows Vista.  I’ve been living with Windows Vista - Longhorn as my primary machine for almost two years now, and I enjoy looking back at how each milestone has brought us closer to the finish line.  My family has also been living on Windows Vista for a long time – every computer in the house – from our media center to my 7 year old son’s machine.  I hope you’ve been following along and trying the different public releases.  RTM is not far away, and the team is really thrilled at the prospect of getting the final product out to the world.

Thanks for your continued interest in Windows Vista!

Windows XP Era

Windows XP was Launched in New York City on Oct. 25, 2001

BILL GATES: Well, it took more like six years, but certainly our users gave us a lot of reasons to say that Windows 95 simply isn’t good enough.

Well, let me herald the end of the DOS era here. I’ll just simply type exit for the last time in MS-DOS.

MS-DOS: Excuse me, Bill?

BILL GATES: Yes, DOS?

MS-DOS: Bill, I brought you the PC. I helped make Windows. And I’m running over 400 million PCs today. You aren’t going to do this, are you, Bill?

BILL GATES: Sorry, DOS.

BILL GATES: Well, that movie wasn’t called 2001 for nothing.

So in many ways this is a transition point. It’s the end of too many PC crashes. It’s the end of the static Web era and the start of an era where the Web will be dynamic. We’ll program against the Web. This new term, XML Web services, you’re going to be hearing about that more and more because Windows XP lays the foundation for that.

I also hope we’ll say that it’s the beginning of the end of the narrowband era, that people see with XP and it’s capabilities that broadband really should arrive not only for businesses but eventually for consumers as well.

You can say what we’ve done here is we took the best of Windows 95, the broad usage, the large number of applications and we took that compatibility and over all these years we’re able to build that into our high-end technology, the so-called NT kernel that’s at the heart of both the Professional and Home Edition here. It’s revolutionary to be able to do that, and yet we made it evolutionary. In terms of the user interface, the applications, we’ve allowed people to take that step up.

I was at the Marriot Marquee in NYC the day the Windows XP era began, by chance I found myself standing next to Bill and I congratulated him on the new OS as I was glad to get beyond Win 9X and DOS. I hope to see Bill back in NYC in 97 days when the Windows Vista era begins.
