When AutoCorrect Goes Bad
Our own Dan Fernandez shows how to have fun by adding some "interesting" entries into Microsoft Word’s AutoCorrect feature. Now Catch Dan's article and video demonstration.

Coding4Fun article Where did that sound come from?
Dan Fernandez walks through how to programmatically change the sound events built into Windows to amuse and annoy your victims.
Randomly Opening CD Tray
Jeff Key knows how to annoy his April Fool's "victims". Imagine the frustration for the PC user who can't understand why her CD drive tray keeps popping open without warning throughout the day! You probably already know who you want to play this prank on!

Persistent Error Messages
Oh how we hate them. Everything is going along fine and then something happens causing a message box to pop-up and tell us there is a program error. Sometimes it is simply a matter of acknowledging the message with a click and restarting. Express Product Manager Jacqueline Russell thought it might be a good idea to make it a little more painful. See how many fake, and progressively ominous, messages it takes before your victim figures out it's an April Fool's prank.

Shattering Screen Saver!
DirectX Guru Andy Dunn (The ZMan) works his visual magic again in this application that captures your desktop screen image then runs it as a screen saver. The prank comes when your victim sees the screen appear to crack and shatter like glass!

MSN Search Spoof

April fools day comes but once a year, so make it a memorable one with a little help from MSN Search Spoof. Have fun!

Search Macros

What are Search Macros?
Search Macros are a feature of Live Search that make results more relevant for a given search topic.  This is done by easily using, creating and sharing customized sets of search engine rules.

Technically speaking, a Search Macros are custom, user-created groups of search operators built with the Live Search query language (see ‘Symbol reference’ and ‘Keyword reference’ in our help section). Macros are stored on our servers and are available to any user on live.com.  All macros can be used by anyone completely anonymously.

Build Your Own Search Engine, sounds like a great idea!

Mix06 was full of great content and new ideas from Microsoft and many of the speakers and participants who gathered in the desert last week  The  microformats and structured blogging BOF meeting had the air of a clandestine public assembly because soon after Marc Canter and Tantek Celik declared the taggers manifesto we were seen as an unlawful public assembly as we were dispersed by the casino police..

Marc has been traveling the planet promoting microformats, microcontent and structured blogging, saying there is no need for standards wars, so who's tags are we to trust?

Will tags bring me more readers or will it just be a gift for the content catchers?

I taged three of my posts at Mix06  with a Technorati Tag, but not one made it to their site, looking at the blog posts caught there, I don't get a very good account of the conference.

I taged my photos at Flickr, but now so many photos of Las Vegas hotels and the action out on the strip have obscured the snaps of the conference I went to.

So is  microformats, microcontent and structured blogging a way to bypass the search engines and establish new portals created with our content?.

The Identity Metasystem

We all know that Identity is very important, it's who we are. Kim Cameron has spent years thinking about identity, we all need to think about how we can authenticate ourselves in the virtual world of networked communication. Tokens, Tags, Metadata, URL's and certificates need to align like tumblers inside a lock to reveal just who we really are.

Microsoft Updates Windows Vista Road Map

Business availability for Windows Vista in November 2006, consumer availability in January 2007.

REDMOND, Wash. — March 21, 2006 — Microsoft Corp. today confirmed that Windows Vista™, the next generation of the Windows® client operating system, is on target to go into broad consumer beta to approximately 2 million users in the second quarter of 2006. Microsoft is on track to complete the product this year, with business availability in November 2006 and broad consumer availability in January 2007.

Steve Lohr's not at MIX06

Yesterday was an exciting day here at MIX06 with a fun keynote and great demos of software appellations that live on the Web. There are Labs and Ultra-Mobile demos, XBOX 360's, Media Center PC's and all the plasma you come to expect in Las Vegas.

Arriving on sight early this morning I jumped on the Wi-Fi and checked the email. After working my way through a bunch of blogs I turned to the NYTimes and was stunned to read Steve Lohr's bitter account of what was going on here in the neon city of the desert.

Microsoft Develops Version of Internet Software Tools

Not a word about Tim O'Reilly's conversation with BillyG and not one nice thing to say about ASP.Net, Atlas or Vista. Steve does mention Scott Dietzen of Zimbra whom I met last week at SXSW. Zimbra makes a web based email and calendaring system that’s adequate for running a small business, but it's no Exchange killer. Zimbra uses AJAX, something that was developed by Microsoft, Atlas is the next generation of asynchronous interactive technology .

Have a look at Virtual MIX and see what is going on here at mix06 .

Atlas Community

"Atlas" is a free framework for building a new generation of richer, more interactive, highly personalized standards based Web applications.
This new Web development technology from Microsoft integrates client script libraries with the ASP.NET 2.0 server-based development framework. In addition, 'Atlas' offers you the same type of development platform for client-based Web pages that ASP.NET offers for server-based pages. And because 'Atlas' is an extension of ASP.NET, it is fully integrated with server-based services. “Atlas” makes it possible to easily take advantage of AJAX techniques on the Web and enables you to create ASP.NET pages with a rich, responsive UI and server communication. However, "Atlas" isn’t just for ASP.NET. You can take advantage of the rich client framework to easily build client-centric Web applications that integrate with any backend data provider.

There's much going on here everyday with Blogs, Forums and the start of a community.

Lawyers Reboot

Congress Sets New Federal Debt Limit: $9 Trillion

Like many cash-strapped Americans who have maxed-out credit cards, the federal government has hit its limit for borrowing funds to keep operating. If the limit isn't raised, the government likely will run out of borrowing authority within days, risking a shutdown.

When President Bush took office five years ago, the national debt was at $5.6 trillion; since then, big budget surpluses have collapsed into huge deficits, and the debt has shot up nearly 50 percent.

NY NJ UG Meetings

Crash Course on Developing Mobility Solutions  is tonight's talk at NYCDOTNETDEV.

While the rate of personal computer innovation is slowing, the mobility space is exploding with a proliferation of new wireless standards, gadgets and devices of all sizes, shapes and denominations. Similarly, there's no shortage of technologies available from Microsoft when it comes to developing mobile solutions for the enterprise. The obvious question that follows is how do you select among technologies as disparate as Windows Mobile 5.0, .NET Compact Framework 1.0 and 2.0, Windows CE, Pocket PC, Smartphone, SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition, ASP.NET mobile controls and even more? In this rapid-fire session, you will see a broad demo-driven survey of what it is like to develop Smart Client and Web solutions with these different mobility developments options using .NET 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005.
