RIP Jeeves

We had a great send-off for Jeeves at a big party paid for by Barry Diller and the folks at Ask.. Watch him dance...

Ask

The new Ask was unveiled today at Search Engine Strategies in New York City. Jeeves has gone the way of Lavern and Shirley as Barry Diller is attempting to make his mark on the information super highway.

Ask has about two percent of the search market, but Barry has pleanty of cash from his TV and cable shopping ventures and he believes people need more chose. Ask is also the home of Bloglines now and they have their own blog. Ask is not as good to me as Google, MSN and Yahoo is, so what can you do about that Barry?

I had a nice meeting early this morning with the folks behind GenieKnows, they are in the vertical search spaces of Health, Business and Gaming. Give them a spin see what you can come up with.

Origami

The tech tabloids were ringing in the ad click money today as speculation about the origami project went wild. I saw the Origami device at Microsoft a few weeks back, but I had to sign an NDA so I didn't blog about it. So when is an NDA not an NDA? A blogger sitting next to me blogged Bill Mitchell's keynote, the slides had NDA on them, Bill said this was NDA, but here it is anyway;

Ultra-Mobiles = = small but much more…

Ultramobile PCs..

That tech tabloid blog grabbed this story and ran with it, stuck in a stock photo and bingo the links and clicks with a big cha-ching of ad dollars followed.

Not one of the bloggers today seemed to know that the Origami will be anounced at CeBIT in Germany early in March, but it's still a concept with a cool prototype.

No one seems to know about the Vulcan device eather. I'm sure you've seen photos of the OQO it's available now for a few thousand dollars. Do you remember the small Tablet device shown by Bill Gates at his WinHEC keynote? That's still a concept waiting for a working prototype to be built.

    Digital Inclusion Awards

Microsoft Research announced a $1.2 million funding opportunity through a request for proposal process last fall and now the 17 winning proposals have been selected. The goal: to empower academic researchers worldwide to tackle technological challenges to positively affect health, education and socioeconomic conditions.

The term “Digital Inclusion” describes the goal of expanding the capabilities of computing technology worldwide to better serve social and economic challenges of underserved communities, both rural and urban. Specifically, Digital Inclusion means that computing must be affordable, accessible and relevant. The External Research and Programs group is the arm within Microsoft Research that engages with the worldwide academic research community. Just as Microsoft Research is interested in advancing the state-of-the-art of technologies in the research areas in which we work, the worldwide academic research community is also working to advance the state-of-the-art of technologies. So there’s a natural intersection between the interests of the worldwide academic research community and Microsoft Research. The External Research & Programs group is always looking out for academic research trends, interests, and areas that are significant and relevant.

    Social Comments

I just read on Charlene Li's blog about Forrester's "Social Computing: How Networks Erode Institutional Power,And What To Do About It" .....guess what I'm going to do about it? I'm going to point you to Clay Shirky's post on Social Software and the Politics of Groups published in 3/03, nowhere in this essay does Clay mention blogs, yet Forrester wants us to imagine that blogs are social software.

Blogging is first and foremost publishing with the added feature of comments and trackbacks to enable a conversation. Markets are conversations is the manifesto of the cluetrain and that can be downloaded for free, so why would anyone pay Forrester $299.00?

Charlene is one of the authors of this report, but you will not find a link back to her blog; Charlene Li's insights on technology developments in media and marketing....how curious is that?

Social computing ignored the axiom on the internet nobody knows you’re a dog in their race to gather eyeballs, traction and capital.

On a blog you have a voice and a voice is recognizable, your reputation is your authentication.

Whenever I get something wrong on my blog someone will quickly comment, yesterday in the New York Times was a story about a photograph by Ansel Adams, but nowhere could I comment that this was a photo of Georgia O'Keeffe's hands.
