SharePoint Kit

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Discovery Kit

By Amanda.Murphy

This is a handy release for those looking for more info on deploying SPS. An area somewhat difficult to tackle for the newly appointed SharePoint admin. Looks fabulous! Notice the reference to how to use the SQL Service Report Pack that was released some time last month.

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Discovery Kit

The SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Discovery Kit includes a series of discovery labs that go beyond learning about a particular component of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to understanding how to build a divisional portal site solution, how to deploy Web applications that integrate tightly with the portal site environment, how to use SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services to track and analyze portal site usage, and lastly, how to customize the portal site user interface.

There are 6 labs in the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Discovery Kit. The lab manuals includes a description of the business scenario that is addressed by the lab, the teaching objectives of the lab, step-by-step instructions, dependencies for each lab and the expected amount of time needed for the lab assuming a basic familiarity with Windows SharePoint Services and limited SharePoint Portal Server 2003 experience.

Windows '95+10

START me up!

10 years ago today Windows '95 was Launched worldwide as thousands of young gamers waited on long lines at brick-and-mortar computer stores. Can you remember the day’s software was sold in brightly colored boxes like Cereal and Soap?

The teenage gamers recognized the need for 32bit computing instantly, major corporations needed to conduct million dollar studies before they eventually upgraded.

I was living in Europe ten years ago and my first copy of Windows ’95 was in German. I will never forget the joy of wiping away OS2 and loading Windows '95 on my IBM 701 ThinkPad, it responded in an almost life-like realization that this was the OS it was made for.

Happy Birthday Windows ’95, I learned computing by patently caring and feeding you with upgrades and bug fixes. I’ll never forget the time I cycled 65 miles to Tralee with a floppy disk in search of a DLL file that no one in South West Kerry had. I found it, it was a NT DLL and how it got into my SYSTEM File I’ll never know, but you taught me how computers work and made me appreciate Windows XP as much as I'm anticipating the arrival of Windows Vista.

Google Talk

Talk and IM with your friends for free

Late last night or early this morning depending on your geo-location Google launched their anticipated IM Client. Over on Channel9 yesterday we were discussing the possibilities as talk.google.com was redirecting to www.google.com/talk , then two members used the Jabber IM client and pointed it at talk.google.com and started communicating.

Google Talk will now compete with AIM, Yahoo and MSN Messenger, but not for long as I believe P2P VoIP will be the communications tool that everyone will be using very soon.

Video Conferencing is not there yet and how about file sharing, it must be possible but will users begin to swap music and films? Will Google get into the Games business? On-line Gaming is huge and growing bigger everyday!

Do you know who has the biggest VoIP Network in the world? XBOX Live, with all the gamers trash-talking their oppenents from one cotenant to the other.  Google must be aware of this fact, so they must be looking into this exciting new area, games and talk are just another way to attain their corporate mission of organizing and making all of the world's information accessible.
