Hossein Eslambolchi gave the afternoon Keynote here at Interop giving his insight on our technical outlook from the prospective of a man involved in network research for many, many years.
IP will EAT EVERYTHING!
Security is critical – software bugs are a major problem.
Convergence of communications & applications.
Wireless internet will be BIG – driving mobility.
Sensor networks will be everywhere and we will need many, many more IP addresses.
E-collaboration will dominate the workplace as will the next generation of speech technology.
Broadband will be common – the death of locality will converge.
Wireless & wired lines will converge.
Knowledge mining will transform the way we do business.
Home Lans will proliferate.
After the Keynote I went up to talk Hassein, we met last year at Web 2.0. I asked if he thought there would be an AT&T Labs in two weeks time. He assured me that AT&T Labs is the Crown Jewell in SBC’s takeover of AT&T, but I had to tell him that if this merger goes through AT&T Labs will be nothing but an asset to be sold off. “No, no” he said, “it will continue”. So I asked him if he plans to remain in New Jersey or will he be moving to Paris Texas, “I do not know my plans”. Will you vote in favor of the merger, “yes, I will be voting in favor of the deal”, no chance he will ever be CIO of SBC.
