Itanium 2

Without acknowledging that the 64bit Itanium chip has been a major flop, Intel and HP yesterday announced big plans for a new multi-core Itanium 2 chip. Two years ago I attempted to build an Itanium Server but was unable to acquire the Pluto chip-set which was developed and owned by HP. Now the Pluto team will be joining Intel where I guess they will be designing the Pluto 2 chip-set.

Why is it in our fast paced technology industry we are completely unable to deal with failure? Thomas Edison failed in his experiments more often then he succeeded and was well able to learn from his mistakes. Public Relations and Marketing too often get out in front of development and expectations are never fully realized. So who can we trust? We know we are moving into 64bit computing and thankfully we have AMD’s Opteron, but I have been running an AMD FX-64 system for over a year on beta software from Microsoft and that's way too long.
