Google IPO

The New York Times has had three stories in two days about the Google IPO. The LA Times had one this morning and now the Guardian has reported that a Bank has been selected for the flotation (but the server there is too busy to respond). During the dot Com Boom we learned about IPO's, they are pyramid schemes designed to make the few who are on top very, very rich. The NYT's goes into detail about all the billions that will be raised with this IPO, but how do they know? They know that they will print a story about this IPO every day till it comes true, maybe they have a piece of the action.

Google has chosen Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse First Boston to lead it's "widely-anticipated” (Brit speak) why can't they just say inevitable Wall Street flotation. So how can I get in on the action? Who will be stuck with the stock after all the big boys have cashed out?

Maybe it's time to start searching for another algorithm, sooner or later one will pop up!

A year ago Today

A year ago today the .NET Framework 1.1 and Visual Studio® .NET 2003 were launched in San Francisco along with Windows Server 2003. In an industry that is always looking forward, today is day to mark and celebrate the technologies that have changed all of our lives. So today have a beer for Visual Studio.Net 2003, then have another for Windows Server 2003, a third for the Framework 1.1, then we can toast the .Net Framework 2.0 and Visual Studio.Net 2005.......

Devscovery

I just confirmed my reservation to Devscovery next week in Washington DC. I am looking forward to meeting fellow bloggers and .Net Rockers and whole bunches of code loving boys and girls!

Hey Cisco

What?

Your Security man, it's vulnerable!

Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) Software may contain a vulnerability in processing SNMP requests which, if exploited, could cause the device to reload.

The vulnerability is only present in certain IOS releases on Cisco routers and switches. This behavior was introduced via a code change.

This vulnerability can be remotely triggered. A successful exploitation of this vulnerability may cause a reload of the device and could be exploited repeatedly to produce a Denial of Service (DoS).

    Security sells

I attended a live tech event last week on the timely topics of Security, Mobility, Wireless and IP Telephony. Microsoft and Intel were the lead sponsors of the event, but for some obscure reason did not bother to show up.

Symantec gave a very good presentation on security, they have a great website where you can go and check to see if you are infected.

Cisco gave three presentations, networking hardware is their domain, but now they are also selling Security and IP Telephony. The Security talk was your typical worst case scenario, evil programmers, delinquent teens, and bad Microsoft software. After listening about all the layers of security Cisco would like to sell me to protect me from me clicking on attachments, I had to raise my hand and implore; “after all we have been through, ILOVEYOU, SLAMMER, MYDOOM, why don’t we just stop idiots from clicking on attachments”. The Cisco spokesman was offended that I would use the word “idiots” in mixed company (salesmen and customers). Had Microsoft been represented, they could have spoken about Windows XP SP2 and Group Policy in Active Directory.

The last talk of the day by Cisco was on IP Telephony, what made this remarkable for me was that we were fifty yards from Intel’s Dialogic office!

    VB.Net Rocks!

Last night we had an incredibly informative NYCDOTNET User Group meeting, Amanda and Steve from the Visual Basic.Net team rocked our world! The best news (aside from Edit and Continue) is that Visual Studio.Net 2005 is amazing! Tool bars are now tucked away from view, and code snippets galore are a click away! This thing looks so easy to use your Mother may begin coding for a living! We were extremely impressed with Amanda and Steve, they listened to our gripes and suggestions. The more complicated the question the more involved and complete was the answer.

Long live VB.Net and if you get the chance catch the User Group Tour!

    New Techniques

We had a memorable user group meeting last night; Miguel was extremely well prepared for his presentation, he has been preparing for this talk for years. The most exciting aspect of his talk was that we were blazing a trail, covering new material that didn’t come from a book or a Microsoft  PowerPoint, but from Miguel’s creative use of Visual Studio.Net. There was a good bit of participation from group, we all hung-on for an hour longer then scheduled, and the session is not over yet (so join in)!

    ASP.Net Techniques

We are having a meeting of The Northern New Jersey .Net User Group, N3GU (for you acronym collectors) tonight. Miguel Castro with be giving a talk on ASP.Net Techniques, we have come a long way from "what is ASP.Net" or the difference between "ASP and ASP.Net". We are located in Parsippany NJ (the First Technology State) and everyone is invited, you can sign-up or just show-up! Even if you don't know a thing about .Net it's worth coming just to meet Stacey!

Next month the east coast Don, DonXML will be talking about Encrypted Connection Strings.

    InterTrust

This is all about digital rights protection technology. InterTrust hopes to make it’s digital rights management software a standard for media distributed over the Internet. We need digital rights protection so that creative people who produce software, songs or stories can be financially compensated for their efforts. We need this kind of management software to be affordable by individuals not just a few corporate conglomerates who will continue to exploit the creative efforts of individuals.

Interestingly an investment group including Sony and Philips Electronics bought InterTrust for $453 million in 1/04 and now three months later Microsoft is settling their licensing deal with InterTrust Technologies Corporation for $440 million. Sony and Philips created DVD technology.

    WS-Security

This has been the week for catching the Security bug, let's hope it propagates around our networked world.

Web Services will require above all else TRUST before they become components of our every day lives. Thankfully a group called OASIS is working to deliver that confidence in our Next Economy.

Ultimately it will be up to us as developers to complete this loop and enable our networked economy to thrive.

    My Security

Security defined: Freedom from risk or danger; safety. Freedom from doubt, anxiety, or fear; confidence.

Who is responsible for my computers security? You guessed it, me! I lock my house, I lock my car and I pull that zipper on my pants up several times a day. Would I think of hiring someone to follow me around and lock my doors and pull up my zipper? Why do so many companies think they can sell security as a service? With all the breakdowns we have suffered visa vie viruses and worms, they obviously haven’t been doing a very good job (yet they have thrived by contributing to the current climate of fear).

I back-up importaint files, Hard Drives fail, that’s a fact of life.; I grab those updates as soon as they are offered, I've got a good firewall (enabled)! I have disabled HTML email, and even if they tell me I have won a million $ I don’t open uninvited attachments.

Where are all these contaminated emails coming from? When I do a DNS search on the ones that land in my inbox I have discovered a pattern; they all come from broadband ISP accounts. Broadband DSL and Cable ISP’s are selling internet access, (access works two ways) their minimum requirements of Windows ’95, 50m of HD and 32m of RAM are maximizing their profits at our expense.

As developers, we are learning about security, it all begins at code level.

We live in a networked world; we need to educate our neighbors, if we are all secure we will fulfill the promise of the information age.

    Security Summit

About one thousand people were in attendance at the NYC Security Summit yesterday morning, less the one hundred were there by late afternoon. In an unprecedented anticipation of the free lunch crowd fleeing, the grand prize giveaway was held at 9:30am! Mike Nash Microsoft VP of the Security Business Unit was a particularly poor speaker, but he got the point across that Security is an A #1 priority. Patrick Hynds gave two fabulous afternoon developer track presentations, too bad most of the attendees had split. Windows and .Net Magazine had a Security Roadshow at the same venue two weeks ago, one of the best organized events I have ever been too, yesterdays was a big budget bust.

    Channel 9 has landed

We've arrived, we're on TV! This is not the evening news, no superficial smiles and nobody dies. This is about what it is like to make software, and as software is never finished this should run a long, long time! It all started with a blog, then there were hundreds of blogs now we have this: What the heck is Channel 9?
