Software Development Lifecycle Models

Raymond Lewallen provides a great overview of 4 software development lifecycle models:

  • the Waterfall Model
  • the V-Shaped Model
  • the Incremental Model
  • the Spiral Model

If you're interested in or looking for more information on the different lifecycle models you might want to check out Steve McConnell's - Rapid Development [Taming Wild Software Schedules]. In this book Steve McConnell has a chapter on "lifecycle planning" where he covers next models:

  • Pure Waterfall
  • Code-and-Fix
  • Spiral
  • Modified Waterfalls
  • Evolutionary Prototyping
  • Staged Delivery
  • Design-to-Schedule
  • Evolutionary Delivery
  • Design-to-Tools
  • Commercial Off-the-Shelf Software

As a wrap-up of this chapter Steve McConnell list a number of questions which will help you choosing the most effective lifecycle model for your project and the model strenghts and weaknesses of the models defined above. Highly recommended reading!
